@sarah-inkdragon Absolutely! Understanding psychology (whether formally or just organically through observation) is a huge boon to creating well-rounded characters. Loving it is just icing on the cake.

I’m sure you’ll be published, someday!

@sageinthemeadow No worries! The threads are here forever! No time limits on these bad boys. *pats discussion threads lovingly*

I think you’ve really got this part down! Your character’s backstory really connects deeply with his personal struggle and arc. Well done! As I was reading your summary of his story, it felt very much like something that a real person would struggle with given the same circumstances.

@mlbolangerauthor I am also a discovery writer – although I embrace the term pantser with no hesitation… haha! XD But it is so important to know where we are going beforehand (especially in a series!). I think if we can pull elements of both styles of writing and mesh them into a technique that works for us, then we’ve done well to heed the “unfettered artist” side of ourselves and also the “calculated genius” side which must balance that out.

I was rewarded just hearing about that discovery process, as you unraveled your character’s motivation and found that out. Those moments of discovery in our writing are so awesome! And that’s a perfect example of what we’re talking about here, too. Because he isn’t present during the first books, all of that is backstory, and you looked at that and figured out how it tied into the theme of his own personal arc.

Great work! I wish you the best as you tackle this last book in your series! Even if you come up with a few new surprises (it’s bound to happen with us pantsers!), you’ll have a more solid structure that you’re basing it off of because you took the time to figure things out more concretely ahead of time.

    Thanks for joining the discussion!
