Definitely focus on the emotions. Correcting mechanics errors is good, but what they’re probably looking for most is whether the mood they’re trying to convey is coming across well. Compliment the places feelings are expressed well to show what you’re looking for in the areas that are too sparse.
And one of the best things that ever happened to me was a time when I was editing someone else’s work and having my own edited at the same time. It helped me not be too hurt when they pointed out the flaws, because I was also looking at a story from the other perspective, understanding that the flaws had to be pointed out to help the story shine. So maybe ask if they can help you edit something of yours at the same time?
