OOOOOHHHH CHARACTER VOICE! My favorite.
But uh… yeah I have no idea how to do it. 😛
My advice is this:
1. Let the first draft be rough. Throw it all at the wall. Some of it will be very in character, some of it not. But let it all be there.
2. When you go through it to thin in out, find a friend who really loves the character and ask them to go through it, letting them point out the parts they think are off. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell character voice stuff for the author just because we’re too close to the story.
3. CHARACTER LOUNGES. But you’re doing that so nvm.
4. Write lots. Character voices tend to iron themselves out as a story moves on. Don’t worry about it, it’ll happen. Some of my best characters are in my third novel, not because I knew a lot about character development back when I wrote it, but because it was 145,000 twinkling words and by the time I got to the end of it I’d spent enough time with my characters to write them well.
Good luck!
