Grace,
That is a tough question, I struggle with something similar. I start writing where I am at, what I do know about this story, and then I’m supposed to actually figure the story out. You know, the whole what is the point/message of this story. I’m more interested in the what happens/the events, but my beta reader keeps scolding me about what I’m trying to say with the events and why they matter. If you can figure out the story by starting from the end, then sure go for it. Other writers do that and it works really well for them. So I suggest starting with what you know about the story and getting that on paper, then start at the end and work your way back. Then once you have figured out what events need to happen, make an outline and figure out if things all fit. I’ve struggled with outlines draining instead of inspiring me to. I know they’re great and work really well for some people, but I haven’t had much luck with them myself.
Have fun with your story. 🙂
