Guilt is indeed a very rare topic these days, at least rarely well done. The best examples in fiction that I ever read were of a Christian being convicted by the Holy Spirit. Some of the books by Martha Finley did this very well, where she described being convicted without being melodramatic or preachy.

In my own life I heard something interesting. I was told by someone reading Soren Kirkengaard, if it’s a emotional reaction to just try to get rid of your guilt, then your remorse comes quickly and leaves quickly. And leads to no real change in your soul. In order to actually change from guilt, you have to have your heart in the right place and understand how your actions affect your relationship with God and with the people in your life. Saying sounds very easy, it’s the doing it part that makes me wonder if I am repenting properly. Am I actually aware of how my sins affect my relationship with God?

I believe some people have a tender conscious and they are more easily aware how their actions effect people, while some people have a hard conscious and can’t feel things as well. These people typically either aren’t right with God or in some cases they are a very new christian. But when we strive to live honestly before God to please Him, He makes our conscious tender, so we are very ware of how our actions effect everyone.

How can we use guilt in stories? Be aware of what it looks like personally, how it effects our own lives, I think that’s the most realistic way to write anything. 🙂 And then use it to make a point. Such as the point of guilt in our own lives, which is to draw us back to God.
