I write to discover, to process, to proclaim, and in special cases to relive and remember. I read your article and found it very thought provoking. I understand though I don’t know how to describe my filter. But I feel like my focus adapts to each story I write. There is often a different message to tell in each one. My mission is simply to tell each story as best I can. My writing has a tendency to be selfish in a way, because I write what I would have wanted to read.
The moment that perhaps inspired me the most and made me want to be a writer was the scene in the Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, where Shasta first meets Aslan. His first reaction is pure terror because it’s dark and he can’t see Aslan as they talk. Shasta complains that all his life has been miserable, everything bad always happens to him. Aslan encourages him to say what’s on his heart, or rather in a way to confess all the lies he’s ever believed about himself. Shasta admits to being alone his entire life and all these terrible things that happened to him. And Aslan tells him that he has been with Shasta during all those times, protecting him, guiding him, even when the boy had no idea. Shasta sees the Great Lion as something both beautiful and terrible. And it’s a scene that I still vividly remember to this day even though I haven’t read those books in years.
That’s the scene that told me I had something to tell people. That God is always there, waiting to reveal to us the lies we believe about ourselves, but also guiding us, protecting us. So I have no idea what my writing personality is, but you have successfully reminded me why I truly write. Thank you 🙂 I hadn’t thought of that in so long.
