What’s interesting about my summer reading (Crime and Punishment) is that I could really see what unknown guilt does to a person. Instead of hitting readers over the head with a message about how sin destroys a person, Dostoyevsky shows the protagonist growing unhappier and more hateful and broken after he commits his crime. I’m not sure how it ends yet (I have 100 pages left) but already the story’s had a powerful message. The Christian character is also presented in a unique way—she isn’t preachy or forceful but you can see that her faith sustains her in a place where most people, like the protagonist, stumble. Even then, though, she’s heartbroken by what she’s had to go through and the troubles that don’t stop coming. Getting to see emotion in the message is really what makes it stick. It also hides the message in a good way; if you can’t just guess what’s going on then you’re compelled to read on and figure it out. Just my thoughts though 🙂
