For me personally, I’m likely to put a book down if I’m shocked right out of the gate. I remember that the first few pages of my pre-freshman year summer reading assignment used so many unnecessary profanities and obscenities that I wanted to throw it across the room. The rest of the book didn’t get much better.

I think shock does have a time and place, but if used improperly or overused it can distract from the actual plot and narrative. Like y’all said, obscenity for obscenity’s sake isn’t great. Just my thoughts though 🙂
