    Lorcan

The girl was eyeing him up suspiciously. “Like I expected one,“ she said rudely. “Nowhere pleasant even exists, unless it’s the place you left.”

The other girl looked at her companion with horror, “Um, no, we’re not from here. But anywhere’s got to be better than Benevola Haven, right?” She looked up at Lorcan. “What’s your name, anyway?”

He gave a sarcastic snort. “The name’s Lorcan, or it was when it mattered.”

“What, does this place issue numbers? I’d swear we’ve been Culled except for that chandelier,” said the rude girl.

Lorcan liked her already. He was about to respond when he felt something small slam into his back. He turned, meeting eyes with yet another strange girl. She was elegant, her stature graceful. Perhaps she was a dancer of some sort?

“Hello! I didn’t see you, I’m so sorry.” She grinned nervously up at him, and got up.

She didn’t seem frightened of him. Then again, neither did Liorah.

“I’m Ophelia Schwann, I think I’ve gotten lost. Do you know the way to the college?”

College? He gave her long look, trying not to pity her. She seemed well-fed, well dressed and all smiles. Her innocence was about to be shattered by this malignant Castle.

“Do you always give your full name to complete strangers?”, he asked her smoothly. She blinked, looking rightfully nervous. He huffed a quiet laugh. “I’m afraid that is not something you should make into a habit, sweetheart.”

He folded his arms as he examined her carefully. “But seeing as you started the introduction process – name’s Lorcan. And I’m sorry to tell you this, but you’re about as far from college as you could possibly get.”
