The Man Who Lives a Few Roads Down

July 15, 2021

By Sarah Susanna Rhomberg

I know his face,

I know his frown,

The man who lives

A few roads down.

His walk didn’t change,

Though he grew older;

His bent back

And hunched shoulders.

When we talked

As I stood by the door,

He’d say hello and goodbye;

It was never more.

Now I haven’t seen him

For a while,

His friendly frown

And slouched profile.

Then recently,

The other day,

Someone mentioned

He’d passed away.

I knew his face,

I knew his frown,

The man who lived

A few roads down.

I saw him often

Walk down the street.

It was normal;

Now it’s incomplete.

I saw him frown

But smile, never.

I knew his walk;

I’ll remember forever.

I’d see him often,

But to my shame,

I didn’t even

Know his name.
