The Lord Is in Control

October 17, 2018

By Katherine Baker

Like a sheep, wandering, hopeless, Lord, I walk through the valley;

Such a wayward child, going the wrong way.

Like a shepherd, You search for me despite my failings;

Like a father, You’re ever near me every day.

On my knees, Lord, I’m falling. I know I am too weak;

Satan tempts me, surrounds me, and I can’t hold on.

But with You I have power. Lord, with You I’m the victor.

I may be weak, O Lord, but I know You are strong.

Only You can protect me from the schemes of the devil.

But they seem ever stronger as the years go by.

But I know You are sovereign and Your will surpasses his.

He may say he’s the victor, but I know he lies.

May I praise You forever! You alone, Lord, are holy.

May I shout out for joy, even though billows roll.

And though Satan seems stronger, he cannot be much longer.

In the end, You will win, Lord. You are in control.

Katherine Baker loves to express the many thoughts and emotions she feels each day in the form of art. From music to poetry to stories to (depressingly amateur) drawing, she is always bubbling with an overflow of God-given imagination that she desires to share with everyone she meets. An overambitious free-spirit, she is always juggling her big ideas and her busy life. She will profess that every good thing she creates is not her own, but only possible through the finished work of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Wow this is great! It sounds like something King David would write!

      Like King David? That’s incredibly high praise! You made my day when I read this. Thank you so much for the encouraging words.

    EPIC! NO OTHER WORD!
    TRUTH! Looks like I was wrong the first time.
    THANK YOU for posting this!
    I can’t write poetry to save my life, but you’ve gone and done it quite easily (at least I assume as much).

      This made me so glad. Thank you for telling me how much this meant to you. It means more than I can say.

      This one actually did come easily, but it’s not because of me (trust me, I’ve had some really bad ones that I have no idea how to fix). This one was really more like a prayer I made during a rough patch in my life, but instead of praying I wrote poetry. I know it was God who gave me the words to speak.

      Everyone is blessed with different ways to glorify God. I’m very thankful he blessed me with the ability to write poetry. Clearly, you have a blessing of encouraging other believers. I hold your words close to my heart.

      He blessed different people in different ways.
      You’re like a modern-day female version of David.

    Katherine, this was absolutely amazing! I loved your first two stanzas, if I have to pick any – they just sound so full of life! I have to say that this is one of my favorite poems I’ve ever read. It’s a prayer that I’ve often had many times, and it’s rhythmic and songlike – I caught myself singing some random tune in my head as I drank in your works. Thank you for writing something so relatable and true and beautiful! <3
