PenSword replied to the topic How do YOU begin a fantasy story? in the forum Fantasy Writers 4 years, 7 months ago
Stories almost always start with the characters for me. Though I do have a couple that deviate.
My current fantasy project came as a scene randomly popped into my head. From there I had to figure out who those people were, what they were doing, and what was even going on.
I do have one story idea that came as the idea “this story, set in this…[Read more]

I used them heavily in my story, but I structured the story so it was expected. Each chapter began with a flashback of some sort that related in some way to what would happen in the upcoming chapter. None of the people who read the first draft for me had any complaints about it, and I have seen published novels use a similar structure. If it’s…[Read more]

That is interesting. It’s neat how different stories can come across to different people.
I don’t know if I have much to say about what you wrote (brain isn’t working right now) but it does sound really neat, and from what you described of your story world it sounds similar to a story world I have that I’m including…[Read more]

Someone’s gotta start something. Anyone here have a horror story they’re currently writing? Or an idea that’s saved for later?
Any good horror books you’d suggest? I read several Ted Dekkers a while ago, but he managed to alienate me enough that I’m leery to read anything else by him.

Hello. I’m late to the party, as always.
I have one contemporary story that I’m playing around with. It’s a road trip story, which I have no idea how to write and that’s making it hard. I think I also backed myself into a corner with my last couple of chapters that I can’t get out of without deleting them, and the character they introduced. Which…[Read more]

PenSword replied to the topic Naming Conventions in the forum Fantasy Writers 4 years, 7 months ago
One people group in my novel use a Russian inspired family name system, where the children get a patronymic, except in my world it would be a matronymic. And the matronymic comes before their given name, then their family name. So Ingvar’s daughter’s first name is Ingvariyna but she’s known as Eirwen. Still working out the masculine versions of…[Read more]

It depends on the set up of the world for me, I think. If it’s set up like a “lost country” or something that could have existed, and the world behaves the same way any other story on our world would behave, it’s not out of place to portray God as you would in a his fic.
When there’s any kind of magic though, that’s when things get iffy for me.…[Read more]

@naiya-dyani Without knowing anything more, yours is probably considered “low fantasy.” That’s what I think mine is anyway.

PenSword replied to the topic Fantasy Magic? in the forum Fantasy Writers 4 years, 7 months ago
I don’t use magic in my own stories just because of personal preference (and laziness) but I don’t have a problem with most story magic. There have been a few that have made me feel uncomfortable, and some of them are viewed as “great Christian works” so maybe I’m just weird, but for the most part “fantasy magic” or like other people have been…[Read more]

Two is hard. I always say that my mystery WIP is most like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (NOT an endorsement), but a combination, hm. Probably the above with a dash of Jack Reacher.

I’ve read the entire series of books/short stories at least once. Some stories I’ve read multiple times. I’ve also enjoyed several of the old Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies, and I’m a fan of the show. I haven’t seen the RDJ movies though.

Thaddeus noticed the cabin and paused, watching it for a moment. It looked like someone was home. He walked over and stepped up the porch. If the people weren’t nice, then at least Philip should be close behind him. It was an adventure.
