@r-m-archer Hello my fellow Calvinist!! (I promise this has nothing to do with politics or religion so please don’t ditch me yet) I saw in a past post that you use Mail chimp for your newsletter and I was wondering if you could answer some questions about it. I’m wanting to start a newsletter but I don’t know what I’m doing whatsoever. I was looking at the reviews for Mail chimp to see if most people like it and it seems to be about 50\50. What’s your opinion of it? Also, is there a lot you have to pay for? Hope you’re doing well! 🙂

    • @erynne Ooh, a fellow Calvinist! Hi! (I wouldn’t have been disappointed if it were, honestly. XD I enjoy theological discussions, at least.)
Sure! I’ve found MailChimp pretty simple to use for a simple beginning list. Recently I’ve been trying to create more sub-lists and more complicated email sequences, and that’s been harder to work through. But if you’re just starting out, it’s a good choice. You can do all of the most important things (create emails, start a list, embed signup forms, etc. etc.) with a free account, and it’s free until you have 2,000 subscribers. There are fancier features you can upgrade and pay for, but they’re… well, fancier.
If you have any ideas of building your writing career into a multi-pronged business (I write, but I also edit and create worldbuilding resources), I would recommend looking for something that lets you do more complicated list management and email sequences more easily, so that you don’t have to move to another provider (or fight to make MailChimp work) later on down the line, but if you’re just looking for something simple then MailChimp is a pretty good option.
I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. 🙂

      • Haha, same. I tell people that if I were in public school I wouldn’t have any friends because I enjoy discussing those subjects more than the latest tv shows or whatever. XD
Anyhow, thanks for responding! I don’t plan on getting 2,000 subscribers (or anything close to that) so I think I’ll try it out! What exactly is your newsletter for? Also, I’m interested to hear about these world building resources!

      • @erynne If I were in public school I’d get kicked out because of what I believe on those subjects. XD
Awesome! I hope it works for you! 🙂
Currently, I use mine to send blog updates (oh, which means I need to get one out for today’s post) and some writing updates, plus any new resources I create for my blog’s writing resource library or preview chapters I put up from my books. I also recently finished putting together a free email mini-course on worldbuilding that operates from my list. And I have a second list for my street team where I send more frequent writing updates on whatever book I’m working toward publishing and send marketing assignments for my street team.
Cool! So as far as free resources go, there’s the email mini-course I mentioned and there are several resources in my resource library, plus the blog posts I write all the time. I also have a $15 worldbuilding basics course that released in October, which focuses on what makes effective worldbuilding, how to build a worldbuilding process that works for you and your project, and how to organize your worldbuilding info in a way that serves you.

    • @r-m-archer
*looks down at Don’t Tread on Me shirt* yeahhhh I can relate XD
Sorry for the late reply, I was out (I did NOT get my phone taken away so don’t even think I did….) Could I sign up for the mini email course?? 😁 world building is not my thing at the moment lol
Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m totally just curious but do you actually get people to sign up for the stuff you gotta pay for? Thanks again for your help 🙂

      • *remembers that rewriting the signup page was one of the items on my to-do list* Uh… just a second… *runs to fix it and comes back* Yes, of course you can sign up! (Assuming SE doesn’t eat the link.) https://mailchi.mp/250056c6b412/2m3ce14mv3
I’d had a few people sign up for the paid course! I’m not the greatest at marketing (that’s my next thing to work on), but even at that I got a small handful of signups. I’m hoping I’ll get more as I learn how to better communicate the benefits of the course in a way that resonates with what people are looking for. And even just as I talk about it more and get feedback from more people about it, since people generally buy things after seeing them pop up over a longer period of time and after hearing what other people think of them. But there’s definitely been *interest* even where there hasn’t been *investment* yet.

    • Ok great! I will do that as soon as I finish this. Marketing is something I definitely need to work on myself. I’m hoping to take some online college courses for business and marketing. You seem to be kinda popular with your blog and everything XD Do you have any published books??
