I really needed this! But I think the second piece might be *too* sparse. I liked the first one better. It really brought out the mood. Yes, some details–like him using his right hand–might be irrelevant. But “He struggled to notch the arrow” is bland and dry.

I accomplished last week’s goal (write 100 words a day, with one cheat day) and I think I’ll make that my goal yet again. It’s really helped me to stay consistent these last few weeks.
I also hit a goal that I wasn’t sure I’d ever actually make happen! Most of my writing is short stories that I publish online. It’s not professional or published,…[Read more]

Ooh, this thread is such a good idea! @gabrielle Your story sounds so great, and I can’t wait to read it!
Most of what I’m writing right now is fanfiction, if I’m honest. I’ve got two big series that are taking up my writing time and mental energy, and a variety of small shiny projects that I can pound out quickly when I get caught up in them.…[Read more]

@gabriellepollack Avensbeck Guild War: I assume I’m not allowed to vote for my own submission, so I vote for #3.

I think I did pretty well at writing every day (though I wasn’t recording it, and I probably should’ve). Same goal this time around: Write at least a little every day, with one cheat day.

I added my story. It’s only about 500 words, and the ending is a little weak. But I think the prose is really vivid, and I had fun writing it!

@gabriellepollack I’ve never written something for one of these before. Is there anything in particular I need to do? Do I put my name at the top? Or a potential title? Something like that?

@gabriellepollack A big moment could be done really beautifully, but I also like the idea of finding beauty in really small moments, the little things. Of course, there’s only so long something like that can be–I could spend maybe 500 words, at most, talking about a beautiful day or the feel of grass between the toes or whatever. Is there a…[Read more]

Oh my goodness, yes. Yes yes yes.
A few months ago, I had a really emotional scene in a story, and it scared the living daylights out of me. It felt like there was a narrow tightrope, and on either side was utter failure–on one side were cardboard cutouts of emotion, with no real feeling; on the other, there was shoving the emotion in the…[Read more]

At this point, I’d just like to get some writing done on a semi-consistent basis. I don’t care how much. If I’m going to quantify it, how about… write at least 100 words every day, and allow one cheat day? Because once I start writing, I won’t just stop, so exactly what goal I set per day won’t matter–I don’t think it’ll ever be lower than 100.

Oh boy. That’s a really vague prompt.
Uh, one time I wrote a whole story that just showed a set of characters and sort of… what they liked? Just the little things all around them, but the specific ones they noticed. Kind of an ‘aesthetic’ sort of thing. Would something like that work? I mean, technically, it’s not a story at all.

I didn’t manage to post anything in last week’s goals, because I was traveling to college and then moving into college and then starting college… Anyway, I’ll try to be a little more active now. Even if I wasn’t on the forum, though, I did a lot of writing these last few weeks! My goal was to finish a short story for a contest and take it…[Read more]

My writing is a little scattered right now. I have one short story that’s had a light edit and needs some heavier ones, but I also have a second short story about 3/4 written, and since that one is for a contest, writing and editing it takes priority. Then there’s a longer story (about 25,000 words, so maybe a novella?) that’s had a first draft…[Read more]

I finished up my current WIP. It’s relatively short, coming out at around 25,000 words. I wrote it in two months. It’s a bit of a hot mess right now, but I’m taking a break before I edit it. No goals this week.

I’m doing Camp NaNoWriMo this month, so I’d like to completely finish the project I’m working on in it. I’ve already hit my word count goal, and there’s maybe one or two thousand words of story left. I’m almost there, just need to hit the finishing stretch!

DragonGeek replied to the topic Topic #11: Shock in the forum Avensbeck Writing Discussions 2 years, 9 months ago
Shock for shock’s sake isn’t good. It needs to add something to the story. Personally, I’d rather not have explicit content anyway, but if a book does do that, it should serve a purpose.

How about a scene where a child discovers something unusual, but doesn’t realize it’s weird? Like maybe he sees a baby dragon (just an example) and is just like “Oh, what a weird lizard” and tries to tell his family about it/take it home, but they don’t believe him and won’t let him go get it to show them?
