Thanks for putting this book club together, @daeus-lamb ! It’s been so interesting to read everyone’s perspective on this book.
I totally agree with everybody that the buildup for the disastrous night was huge and the payoff was…not. And I specifically agree with @taylor-clogston that I felt very led to believe Daisy Grace was the one who would…[Read more]

I consider this the single weakest point of the book.
Fabry is a skilled writer. All the examples you shared, @daeus-lamb, show skill. In a vacuum, they are good, often great writing.
But they don’t work in Jesse Promise.First, a comparative poetic device is a strong seasoning. It adds flair where it appears. It also draws attention to i…[Read more]

Hey, this is already going where I didn’t expect it. I actually really liked Matt. 😁Well, particularly his younger self, but the older self was fine too. It’s fascinating how we read the same things differently. @taylorclogston, the lines you quoted, I…[Read more]

I, uh, hated Matt’s relationship with Jesse =P And while I liked his relationship with Dickie, the narrative conclusion (aside from the first chapter stuff) of their relationship irritated me.
It’s unfortunate we’re talking about their friendship so early in the book, before the most important developments occur. Navigating conflict is the heart…[Read more]

@caseybold @taylorclogston @toklaham-veruzia @allertingthbs @jennythefaun
I’ve honestly never thought about the pros and cons of revealing or hiding aspects of a character early on in a story. As I’m thinking about it, it seems the one thing I’d avoid is the completely mysterious character.
In Six of Crows, all the character are introduced with…[Read more]

@caseybold “rather than the author sticking too much of his personal narration in.”
What did you mean by this?
@jennythefaun “Starting the book about two steps away from the climax (at least that’s how it felt to me) also makes it challenging to keep subsequent events interesting and tense enough…we’ve got a main villain. We’ve got a main go…[Read more]

@allertingthbs Ah neat! Brandon Sanderson is one of those authors I have heard so much about, but never gotten around to actually reading any of his books. Honestly I’m not sure where I would start. XD

@a_nna This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately, as my WIP is centered around a crew of nine people. I have yet to figure this out application to my story, but I think it largely depends on how you pull it off. Like @taylorclogston pointed out there’s a difference between whether they are part of the main cast of POV-providers or…[Read more]

@allertingthbs I live somewhere subjected to Eastern Standard time, and somewhere where the average temperature right now is in the 50s and 60s. 😉 I find it insanely refreshing after winter weather, and I now feel sorry for you looking up the highs and lows in New Hampshire.
One of my favorite things about Spring is the smell of the fresh air. @n…[Read more]

@allertingthbs Heya my lad. Glad to see you. Looking forward to you joining in the book club.
