Isaiah started the topic Why is Christian Sci-Fi Scarcer than Fantasy? in the forum Sci-fi Writers 5 months, 1 week ago
The fantasy thread on SE has tons and tons of topics and active discussions. Why do you think that Christian sci-fi (on this site at least) seems to have so much less engagement? My short-story WIP can be considered sci-fi, and I think we all enjoy the genre in our media. Just curious.

@emily-waldorf Theoretically, but only if we get very broad with some definitions. The more applicable question is whether breakfast cereals qualify more as a dessert or a meal.

In seriousness, I’ll just throw this out there real quick. The greatest commandments as described by the Big Man Himself are “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” I think the way to weigh…[Read more]

Seems I’m a little late to the party on this. At least I have some info to work with here, so I’ll do my best.
Reading through what you have described, it sounds like the only thing standing in the way of the bad people (henceforth referred to as the Bads) are the Christian Sons of Liberty family (henceforth yada yada the Family). And…[Read more]

Isaiah replied to the topic Fantasy Is NOT the Same Thing As Magic in the forum Fantasy Writers 6 months, 3 weeks ago
So I am a little late to the discussion here, but I can still throw in my thoughts on this. You are saying that any usage of the word magic is essentially us, as the authors, endorsing and invoking the practical art of magic as you describe it. It does not matter the context of the story, the world itself, and the readers’ understandings.…[Read more]

Isaiah started the topic Creating Variety in Stories in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 months ago
As a new and inexperienced creator, sometimes I feel like the material I work on is always very much the same. Whether it’s the tone, character models, or even just the intention of the story, it always end up being very similar. How do each of you change up your pieces and motivate yourself to keep the different personalities of different stories…[Read more]

In the last few decades there has been a focus on making entertainment accessible for wider audiences. Take Marvel for instance. It used to be assumed that if you were going to consume comic material, you knew all the old issues and ins and outs of the universe. With the MCU beginning, we got good movies that were enjoyed by a…[Read more]

This has been an interesting book to read (or listen in my case cause I’m lazy and busy) through together and analyze as there is a lot going on thematically, so I’ll do my best to express myself properly here.
The Good
One of the aspects that gripped me most about this book is how certain scenes actually made me dread what was going to happen…[Read more]

One of the aspects of drawing imagery to describe something is the image itself. You can be as imaginative and passionate as you can but if the reader cannot relate to the picture you’re painting, you’ve effectively lost them. That’s something that Chris Fabry does fairly well is use understandable and often common similes to convey emotion. This…[Read more]

Something interesting that the author seems to do in this book is instead of painting us a picture of the places Matt encounters, we learn about them as he sees them.
Chris Fabry could have introduced Dogwood something like this: “Dogwood stretched out ahead of us like the fold of a blanket thrown lazily across an untidy bed. Stores…[Read more]

Something worth noting I think is that Jesse and Dickie are both the first people around Matt’s age and I think the first non family members who don’t comment on his weight. The fact that they keep him on “their level” really solidifies them as being his peers. As @caseybold mentioned Matt is attracted to Jesse from the first moment that they…[Read more]

“How does Chris Fabry show what the story is about so thoroughly right from the start? How can we learn from this?”
All the things that begin to affect Matt in the first chapter are elements of what the story is about. It references his brother through his baseball glove, introduces his childhood friends by way of Dickie’s phone call, and eve…[Read more]

@evelyn I suppose when I say “teaching myself to read more” it means that I know that I enjoy reading. I have the time to set aside for it, just other unimportant things tend to clutter my time that could be spent consuming a book. I’m thoroughly enjoying (when I do read them) the Old Man’s War series by John Sclazi and the Stormlight Archives…[Read more]

Isaiah replied to the topic How many characters is too many? in the forum Fantasy Writers 2 years, 1 month ago
@a_nna I don’t think that having many characters in your story is a bad thing, as long as you aren’t trying to divide the focus of the story into too many different directions. I’m going to use Avengers Endgame as an example.
I consider Iron Man, Captain America, and Thanos to be the focal characters of the Infinity saga. Just about every movie…[Read more]

@naiya-dyani @evelyn Thanks for the warm welcomes (Taylor doesn’t get a shoutout). Just curious but where do you all live? I live in New Hampshire and kinda wish I was somewhere warmer at the moment.
