Hi everybody! As a teen writer myself, I would love to connect to other young authors who are serious about their writing and want to help. I’m putting this under middle grade/ children’s because that’s what I write, but if anyone knows a way to make this a main discussion point, perhaps under YA, that would be really helpful! Anyways, feel free to ask questions and add comments for other people to see. Thanks!

Hi! I’m Lydia, I’m currently seventeen. Do you have a current project? At the moment, I’m torn between a couple things; a sci-fi and a fantasy, both somewhere in the YA/children’s area. What’s your favorite part about writing? For me, I really love my characters. It’s so much fun playing around with them, watching how they interact, and figuring out how they grow.

One of the big things I need to work on is themes: what I’m trying to communicate. The plan is to write a couple short stories to practice that, but I was wondering, would you have any advice?

Do not be anxious about tomorrow; tomorrow will be anxious about itself.

    Hi Lydia!

Yes, I’m working on a middle-grade mystery/action novel. I finished the rough draft and am now working on revising. I love getting new ideas, it’s so exciting to me!

I’ve never been great with themes either, but I’ve done research by reading fables and fairy tales, as well as other books, and deciphering their themes. I think you have to be careful not to overdo it, and have the theme be outright stated. Make sure your characters are the ones who really bring the themes home, their results of their actions often show lessons that readers can learn. And building off classic themes always makes things easier. Good luck!!
