Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

🤫 We don’t speak of that horrible monster. 🤫 We never speak of Bruno 🤫

Bold words to address to someone who literally made her first draft public. LOL.

When life knocks you down, wait 'til it passes over you and then attack it from behind.

🤣🤣 Not knocking you plotters out there! I would do it that way if I could, if my brain only worked that way! My friend has been trying to convince me that This Is The Way (he’s amazing… Not knocking him, either 🤣). I just couldn’t do it. For longer stuff, I start making plot nots once I get a few thousand words into it. But never before. My brain fights me, like, “What is this you’re doing to me??”

My plotting process is following ✨da vibes✨

It is pain and agony. 🤣😭

Omgosh y’all are cracking me up 🤣 This is fun ❤️

*bows dramatically, swishing sparkly glitter all around*

Lollll I relate to that, I both admire and fear pantsers. They do what is impossible for me, plunge into the darkness of an idea with more courage than I could ever manage XD I need to Know Things XD

*points accusatively* She’s a plotter, she finished her first drafts in like a few months she is evil. 😌

*coffin where I was taking a nap bursts open in a shower of pink glitter and I emerge carrying coffee and eating a cupcake* Your days of ruling this city are over, my personal supervillain!!!

OF COURSE TROLL EMPRESS I SHALL NOT RULE THIS CITY I SHALL RULE THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Lol yeah, that’s pretty crazy. (But it’s a really cool first draft!!!!!!)

To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.

Here is how I look at it: I can’t make sense of dark things unless I write about them. I certainly can’t show Christ in dark places unless I go there. In a way, literature is a mission field, which Christians can enter and tell stories of truth and redemption that lead others to Christ. Sherman Alexie wrote a really good article once called Why the Best Children’s Books Are Written in Blood, in which he talks about his experiences reading dark literature and learning how to cope with his own life. I believe it was published in the New York Times if you want to look it up. However, if you want the Cliff Notes version, G.K. Chesterton once said, “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.” I love this quote, not because it gives me permission to write dark fantasy, but because it gives me a direction when I write it. I hope it will do the same for you.

"In a world full of bookworms, be a book dragon."

    Hi Natalie,

I’m not sure if “Dark Fantasy” has specific genre connotations, but I would say my current WIP is of a darker tone for sure. The overall atmosphere is fairly moody and guilt is a prominent theme. I’ve got some monsters and tried my hand at writing creepier scenes as well. It’s different from anything I’ve written before, but I found this story just kind of wrote itself and clicked with my writing style in a way nothing else has before. I think my style is just introspective and moody in general, and I finally found a plot and world that “fits” my writing. But it’s not a hopeless story, and my Christian worldview affects how I handled the more serious tone.
