Okay so I’ve been looking around at a whole bunch of different sites online to determine something: what is the difference between short stories, novelettes, novellas, and novels? I have a story I’m working on that is currently 56k words long. So… is it a novella or a novel?? So many sites have so many differing word counts and so I’m perplexed. I was honestly curious what you all on SE think… (LOL please say 56k is novel worthy because I’d love that… XD)

      [nearly everyone I know so far: @abigail-rebekah, @holly-anne, @the-fledgling-artist, @selah-chelyah, @kayla-skywriter, @ashira, @nuetrobolt]

      LOL please satisfy my curiosity!

Here is a list of the differences between them… I was researching this a little while ago too 🙂

        Flash Fiction: 53 – 1000 words

        Short Stories: 3,500 – 7,500 words

        Novellettes: 7,500 – 17,000 words

        Novellas: 17,000 – 40,000 words

        Novels: 40,000 + words

So yes, congratulations…your book is a novel 🙂 *double high-fives*

        Hope this helps 🙂 🙂

Ps: this is just what I have found online, so hopefully it’s accurate. But, there may be other answers so yes….

I actually just asked this yesterday. XD This is what I got, from multiple people.

            0-1,000 words: flash fiction

            1,000-10,000 words: fiction/short story

            10,000-20,000 words: novelette

            20,000-40,000 words: novella

            40,000+: novel
