Maya Joelle
@mayajoelleHey everyone!
I’m so excited to start using this site! I’ve been reading the SE blog since it first started but didn’t join the forum for various reasons. At last, I have arrived ๐
I’m a teen writer, bookdragon, dreamer, poet, forest girl, Griffinclaw, and knight of Farthestshore (hoping someone gets that reference…) from Michigan. I started writing when I was six (my first story was a Narnia fanfic) but didn’t pursue it seriously until I was 14. I want writing to be part of my life forever and I’m hoping to self-publish my collection of poetry and short stories this fall.
My favorite things include (but are not limited to) cilantro, dark chocolate, Broadway (and musicals in general), performing, tae kwon do, liturgy/hymns/choirs, theology, snail mail, political discussions + podcasts, deep conversations, the U.P. of Michigan, trees/forests, fantasy, folk and Christian music, coffee, and the colors blue + dark green + grey (always with an e) + rose gold + gold.
I recently left YDubs/the Young Writer’s Workshop, so you might know me from there.
Looking forward to meeting some of you!
Maya

@writergirl101Hi, Maya, I’m Ella.ย Nice to meet you!ย You sound like my dream best friend–podcasts, deep conversations, dark chocolate…๐ย Do you play any sports? (is tae-kwon-do considered a sport?)
I love SE!ย I read their articles all the time.
What genres do you like to write? (btw, I love your topic title ๐)ย If you’re into fantasy/historical fiction/futuristic, and if you like to collaborate with other writers, you can check out this thread and see if you’re interested.ย Even if you just have an idea.ย It’s completely fine if you don’t want to, but I’m trying to find more people to do it. ๐
Glad you could join!

@kimlikesartHi @mayajoelle! Welcome!
Your hello’s amazing!
What’s your favorite short story you wrote about?
Dark green/grass green is my favorite color. My mom’s best friend grew up in Michigan until she moved here for college (and stayed) I think. (:
What’s your favorite hymn and folk song? I think I like ‘Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy’ and ‘My Darling Clementine’ (the full song). ๐
Welcome again!!!

@mayajoelleNice to meet you, Ella! (My irl best friend’s name is actually Ella XD) I don’t know if tae kwon do counts as a sport, but if it does, then yes! Otherwise… nope.
I write fantasy, poetry, and occasional contemporary/creative nonfiction. I’ll check out the link! What do you write?
—
I think my favorite of my stories is called “A World Reborn.” It was inspired by the song “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Mis ๐ But I’m currently writing one about a colorblind girl that I’m quite fond of.
Neat! Where is “here”?
Hymn — changes all the time, but currently I’m into “Be Still My Soul” and “In Silent Pain the Eternal Son.” Folk song — does The Gray Havens count? They call their music “narrative pop folk.” If so, then “This My Soul.” (:
Thank you!!

@writergirl101Seriously? ๐ย What a coincidence!
I write fantasy, some poetry (when I’m inspired, always by nature ๐), speculative fiction (dystopian, mainly), and thriller/suspense.ย I have ideas for all genres, but the listed above are the one’s I usually go through with.

@clevercraftsman@mayajoelle You’re here!! It’s been a while since I’ve been active, but welcome! ๐
Tae kwon do sounds amaaaazing. I’ve always wanted to do some form of martial arts, but, ya know, money. XD Perhaps some day.
Oooh, I’ve only just started liking podcasts! What are some of your favorites? I like listening to them while I water flowers in my town (you could call it a job, but it isn’t much of one XD).
Also, what are your favorite musicals? The biggest ones for me are Newsies (!!), and The Greatest Showman. Oh, and if you could see one musical IN BROADWAY what would it be?

@mayajoelle@clevercraftsman Thank you!
As to podcasts… I’m super into political ones, but that can be weird/divisive to talk about so I won’t get into all that. Pseudo-Intellectual with Lauren Chen is my favorite of those, though. I also like The Pivot, The Habit, Story Embers, and all of the Rabbit Room network. The Kate and Abbie Show is one of my favorite podcasts ever. And I like to find interviews with my favorite artists, authors, actors, etc.
Musicals — I have a super long list but I won’t share ’em all now cause, like I said, it’sย long. Some of my recent obsessions are Titanic, Dear Evan Hansen (mature content in a couple of the songs), and some of the songs from Beetlejuice (wouldn’t recommend the whole show, but “Dead Mom” and “Home” are really lovely). I think I’d pickย Dear Evan Hansen at the moment, but I also really want to seeย Hadestown! What about you?

@olivia@mayajoelle, hola, amiga!
No, I’m not Spanish at all, I’m just using an iPhone app to learn the language, and it’s really fun. ๐ It’s called Duolingo. Do you have it, by any chance? Anyway… lol
My name is Olivia, as you can see. When I read your introduction of yourself, I had to smile, because I didn’t really get more serious about writing until I was 14 as well. I haven’t really written a lot of stuff, but I’m working on writing a story with a fellow writer of mine for a friend of ours. It’s sorta slow, but it’s fun to work on when I get into it. Lol. (Am I the only one who finds it hard to really work a lot on a story because I’m not “in the mood”, so to speak?)
I write short stories (of funny things that have happened to me), and fiction (mostly like Medieval times). I like to read, listen to music and write it, play piano, walk through the boreal forest around the town where I live (I live in Northern Ontario), make iced caps in the hot summer days, (and I consider all of summer too hot, so I make them a LOT!!!!) ๐ ๐ and much more that I can’t think of right now. Oh, and skating and playing hockey in the winter. (Winter is my favourite season, because it’s not hot all the time, so I’m not dying of heat-stroke. And because I get sunburned easily, so it’s sorta annoying trying to make so I’m not getting beat red all summer long.) ๐ (Pretty true, too.)

@mayajoelle@olivia salve, amica! (That’s Latin. Which I do know… sort of.) I’ve used Duolingo in the past, but it’s been a while. I was trying to learn Welsh ๐
It definitely is hard to work on a story when you’re not in the mood… it’s one of those things I’m trying to make myself do anyway. I was at a webinar with Josiah DeGraaf a while ago (it was for the Young Writer’s Workshop) and I’m hoping to put some of his tips for consistent writing into practice this summer. Once I figure out what my schedule is going to be.
What is an “ice cap”? Do you like living in Ontario? I’ve always wanted to live farther north (I’m in southern Michigan — which isย kinda north, but not really). My favorite season is autumn/fall, because it’s not super cold but not crazy hot either, and it smells so good. Plus my birthday is in October XD

@olivia@mayajoelle, that’s cool that you were trying to learn Welsh. Sounds really cool. ๐ I used to really want to learn German, (though I’m not exactly sure why) but I sorta gave up on that because I’m not even sure who I’d speak it with. I do sorta want to go to Germany still, though, so I might learn some of it on Duolingo, or at least just try it out. And my friend got me hooked on learning Spanish so we can go to Spain together later, so I agreed to try it out. So far I’m really enjoying it, and I actually find it fun to do.
Ya, it is hard to write sometimes, but if I try to keep up a daily streak, that helps me write a lot more, even if I don’t necessarily want to. Lol ๐
Um… I’ve never had to explain what an iced cap is, but it’s sorta just like iced coffee (I assume you know what that is?!?!), but instead of just putting the ice cubes in, you blend them up with the coffee in a blender. Sorta make sense? It’s just a cold coffee drink. (Maybe they’re just called something else where you’re from? I don’t know.)
I love living in Ontario!!!!!!!! It’s awesome, and I love the cold, snowy winters! Ya, I suppose that is a good reason to like October. Lol. ๐ My birthday’s in May.

@mayajoelle@olivia Yeah, Welsh is an amazing language. I originally was trying it because Tolkien liked it, but now I just like it for itself. The pronunciation isย beautiful (once you understand it).
I’m actually mostly German and have some family members who have learned it, but I never tried. I’d love to go to Germany, though. I’m Lutheran and I really want to see all the places Martin Luther lived. And the Diet of Worms XD
You’re going to Spain?! That’s awesome! I’ve only been out of the U.S. once, and that was when I was a baby. I was in Canada for like an hour ๐
Ah. We make those here too, we just don’t call them ice caps? It’s just frozen coffee.
Snow is not my favorite thing toย be in, but it looks gorgeous.

@kimlikesartHi! I’m listening to those songs right now. (:
I live in Texas, it’s fun… and hot.
Oh cool! My grandfather was partially color blind. Can you tag me if you ever post it?

@mayajoelle@kimlikesart Hi!! Which songs?
I have a friend in Texas, and she likes it. I like the idea of the culture of Texas… but not the heat XD I prefer the four-season climate here in Michigan.
Sure! Not sure if I’ll be sharing it on here, though — I’m a bit wary of putting my writing on a public forum. Previously I’ve only been on private writing communities. ๐
Also, my story is about a girl who is completely color blind — which is so rare it’s possible it’s never actually happened. So. I may have to change some parts of it.

@kimlikesart(: Yeah, Texas is great. I have a friend who moved here from Boston. She loves it here (all the guys hold doors open, manners are paramount even if you don’t like feel like doing them). Except for the heat.
You mentioned โBe Still My Soulโ and โIn Silent Pain the Eternal Son.โ and โThis My Soul.โ
