@dakota@kayla-skywriter Sounds good!
Psalm 119:11
Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.March 25, 2020 at 5:40 pm #109408Kayla Skywriter
@kayla-skywriterOkay, here’s the next part with Altan and Tawny. @dakota @naiya-dyani @esmeralda-gramilton @emberynus-the-dragonslayer @mayacat @urwen-starial
Altan shifted his gun to his back. The weapon was large and awkward, but it was also what set him apart and identified him as what he was, an officer of the law. No, he didn’t serve the government, at least not in the way that the other law enforcement did, Altan served the law.
And right then a law, with more power than that of the government, demanded that he stand in that street and help a young woman clean.
“Do you need more water?” he called to her.
She looked up from where she’d been violently scrubbing who knows what off of the cement. “I think I don’t need more just yet,” she looked at the brown pool surrounding the spot, “soon though.”
“It is ready, just let me know when you want it,” Altan replied. She nodded wearily. She’s working harder than she’s used to, Altan realized. She’s going to wear herself out.
“When you’ve wiped away that spot we should break for lunch,” he said.
“That sounds wonderful,” she replied breathlessly.
Altan fiddled in his pack. There should be enough for us. He finally pulled out two packs of issued food. He’d just go hungry tomorrow.
The girl walked over and sat on one of the crates that was clean enough to keep. “I think that a bucket of scalding water will wash away the remains,” she said, referring to the spot.
Altan poured her a cup of water from his supply, “Here’s to another foe vanquished.” The toasted and drank. Altan passed her a pack of food.
“Where are you from,” she asked Altan.
“I’ve been living in this area ever since I got my assignment,” Altan replied.
“What assignment are referring to?”
Altan settled down onto a clean patch of road and stretched out one leg, “I’m a law officer.”
“That does seem to fit with your companion,” she commented, her eyes shifted to the gun sticking out past Altan’s shoulder.
“Can’t go any where without her,” Altan explained. He couldn’t help but excuse his gun, it just seemed so unnatural to bring it with him when he was just going to talk to a friend. “Where do you work?”
“I’ve got a job at the central government office,” she replied, almost shyly.
Altan puzzled for a moment. Why would a government official be shy about their achievement? “You were one of the ones who discovered the rebel meeting!”
“I didn’t discover it,” she was quick to clarify, “I just helped get things moving.”
Altan nodded. “What’s your name?”
“My name?”
“We were never introduced,” Altan reminded her, “I’m Altan.”
“I’m Tawny,” she smiled at him.
Altan tried to think of something to say. Had he seen her before? There hadn’t been any sort of recognition before, but there was something about her name.
“Nice to meet you, Tawny.”
She stared at him. Awkwardly. How did that bring back something too?
Altan cleared his throat, “You can finish eating, I’ll go scald that spot.”
She nodded a bit dumbly at him and stuffed another bite of food into her mouth.
How we chose to fight is just as important as what we fight for

@naiya-dyani@Dakota @emberynus-the-dragonslayer @kari-karast @urwen-starial @mayacat @esmeralda-gramilton @kayla-skywriter (desperately hope no one’s slipping my mind)
PHEW! Okay, I’ve got my characters’ next pieces ready.
___
Gerik’s fists tightened in his pockets. What’s that boy doing here? he thought, his teeth gritting. It doesn’t matter. He’s pulled the Mockingbirds off our scent. An ugly, bitter thought slid through his mind like algae. I hope he keeps their attention for a while. He deserves all he can get.
Suddenly, his lowered head bumped into something. He looked up into a familiar old face.
“Gamma 6.5,” he said, reminding himself to use the aged apothecary’s code name. The man stared him intensely in the eye.
“Have you seen him?”
Gerik met his gaze. “Seen who?”
“Kiet. The boy who works with me.”
Gerik’s nostrils flared at the name. Kiet, he thought. That’s right. That’s what his name was.
___
Kedori watched as the officers and the young woman disappeared with his friend into the dark stone tower. He dug his fingers deeper into his dog’s fur.
I wish there was something I could do, he thought, tears stinging his eyes. I hope he’ll be all right. That tower—it’s an awful place.
He squeezed his eyes shut. Hoping’s not enough. I know what happens there. So few people that go in come out unscathed. Few enough ever come out at all. His heart pounded in his ears. What if he doesn’t? What if I never see him again?
A shaky breath slipped from his lips. But what if I did. . . what if I helped him escape? What if—
No! Kedori blinked. I can’t. It would be treason! I’d be betraying the whole city.
But if I don’t. . . I’d be betraying him.
___
Kiet braced himself and gritted his teeth as the woman’s gentle hands pulled his wounded leg into her lap. She’ll have to extract the bullet first, he thought, his jaw tightening. Then clean it out, pack it, dress it— He bit back a cry as she pressed near the shot. Breathe, he tried to tell himself, but panic stretched its fingers across his mind regardless.
Then the pain started.
—
By the time the young woman finished with his leg, Kiet was exhausted. His face was streaked with dried tears, his throat tight and sore from trying and failing to stifle the screams. A trembling breath, nearly a sob, escaped his lips.
“Are you done?” a gruff voice said above him. Suddenly, rough hands grabbed his arms and jerked him up.
“Take him to the interrogation room,” another man’s voice said. “We’re ready.”
___Dakota, I’m thinking maybe Rob interrupts Gerik’s conversation?
Also, what does everyone think about the details of the interrogation? I’d like to hold off on writing Kiet’s next part until I’ve got people’s opinions on how it works. Not sure how much I’ll cover, but I’d like to make sure what I do end up writing is correct.-

@dakota@naiya-dyani (Nope, don’t think so. 🙂
He might. . . esp. since he thinks he might know who ‘Kiet’ is. He won’t be rude, though. Hope this is fine!
@emberynus-the-dragonslayer @kari-karast @urwen-starial @mayacat @esmeralda-gramilton @kayla-skywriterRob fell in step behind Gerik, his eye on the youth’s bowed head. He’s showing a different side of him, he thought. And it’s got something to do with the kid that the Mockingbird’s bagged.
He frowned as his mind analyzed the situation. Maybe I’ll have to throw a few question past him. There’s more to this than-
The shadows in front of Gerik darkened. A figure stepped into his path.
“Hey-”
Too late. Gerik’s lowered head bumped into it.
Rob’s hand immediately tightened around the .45 in his hand and stepped up to Gerik’s side.
Gerik lifted his head and looked up into the man’s face. “Gamma 6.5,” he said.
He knows him. The knuckles on Rob’s gun-hand relaxed.
The aged man stared intensely into Gerik’s eyes. “Have you seen him?”
Gerik met his gaze. “Seen who?”
“Kiet. The boy who works with me.”
Gerik’s nostrils flared.
Rob glanced from one to the other. If this ‘Kiet’ is who I think he might be-
“Excuse me, Gamma 6.5,” he spoke up in his ‘professional’ voice “But may I ask you few questions?”

How many days after the raid is it currently with everyone’s writing and stuff? Can it be two days after? Just wondering so I can work on Rin’s next part.
I do not write the story... the Universe writes the story and I am simply its messenger.

@esmeralda-gramilton@mayacat I was doing the morning after, I think. But two days works too, as long as the raid isn’t public news yet.
I wonder what I was thinking whenever I re-read my old, well-loved stories

@urwen-starialI believe Jin’s arrest would be the next morning after the raid.
Just tagging @emberynus-the-dragonslayer to verify this information.

Gerik’s lips pressed together. What’s their problem? he thought tensely.
The old man looked at Gerik’s companion. “Do you know something?” he asked.

@dakota@mayacat I think @naiya-dyani and I are still in the night of the raid . . . ??
“I might.” Rob replied. “Where was Kiet when you last saw him?”

@naiya-dyani@mayacat Yeah, we’re still on that XD. I think we’re all bouncing in different times at the moment.
The apothecary glanced at Gerik and raised an eyebrow. Sparrow? his eyes asked. Gerik rolled his eyes to the side. The man’s lips pressed together, but he shook his head and looked the newcomer in the eye.
“We were on our way to the Knot House for the meeting tonight,” he said. “There was some kind of trap waiting in the alley. We split up. I tried to draw the officers after me and then evade them before meeting back up with him. But I haven’t been able to find him since.” Worry flashed through his eyes. “Have you seen him? He’s short, black hair, green eyes, wearing a dark green sweatshirt. . .”

@dakotaRob’s heart sank as he heaved a frustrated sigh. I knew I should’ve rescued that kid! Now what do I tell this guy?
“I’m afraid I did, Gamma 6.5.” Rob hesitated a moment. Just tell it to him straight. There’s really no way to put this gently.
“Apparently, the government agents shot him in this leg and brought him down. They were arresting him when I saw them.”
