@edmund-lloyd-fletcher Hello!  I have a few tips if you’d like to hear them.

First of all, I really like how you approached the lighting in this piece!  Lighting is pretty hard, but the way you approached it is really fun and dynamic (which is pretty impressive considering that you’re new to digital art!).

One thing that I noticed is that the characters don’t have very clear anatomical structure.  By this, I mean that the overall shape and form of the characters reads as 2-D lines, rather than 3-D forms.  One thing that really helped me is learning to study and break down anatomical features into geometrical shapes, rather than just drawing the outline of the features I see.  It’s difficult to do at first, but once you get used to it it becomes a lot easier!  I’ve found it especially helpful to look for vaguely triangular shapes, since I think that the shape has a really dynamic look that fits with my style.

This applies to drawing in a chibi or anime inspired style as well!  Even if your style is super stylized, drawing will become a lot easier and rewarding once you start learning the fundamentals.  I’m trying to learn to draw chibis myself, and it’s…a work in progress lol.  However, I do have some ideas that might help.  A huge part of the chibi art style revolves around drawing soft, cute “baby” like features.  By making the head really big and wide, and making the body and arms/legs shorter and fatter, you can make your characters read more like chibis.  Also, something I’ve struggled with is the exact proportions of the head.  I used to give my chibi characters a normal, albeit oversized head, but that just looked really… w r o n g.  If you make the cheekbones softer, give the character a bigger head, and make their chin smaller, it’s really going to to help your character look cuter, which is really what the chibi art style boils down to.

I hope this helps!  I’m still learning too, but I absolutely love talking about art, so let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to talk about!
